Leonel Salguero's practice is rooted in sustained, cyclical observation. Variations in opacity, transparency, the pace of execution, and light allow his images to move between precision and ambiguity, presence and disappearance. Everyday objects are given the attention and intensity usually reserved for portraiture, becoming at once familiar and strange. His paintings seem to hold several moments in time simultaneously: the instant something was observed, the time spent painting it, and the histories that came before it.

Leonel Salguero (b. 1989, Ciudad Obregón, Sonora,
Mexico) graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City. He lives and works in New York.
